(1) Obviously, it's sort of weird for me each year whenever SC and A-State play, although I was born and raised a Sun Devil and almost always root for them to win. But in a game like this, when both teams appeared like they wanted to do everything they could to lose, rather than win, it's sort of a double-downer. Idiot Sullivan throws a pick six, freshman RB Cameron Marshall obliterates a lot of the promise that he's shown by fumbling at the SC 10 on the first drive of the game, Lawrence Guy committing another boneheaded personal foul, but also SC's receivers dropping easy passes, etc. Frustrating game to watch as a fan of both teams.
(2) As for Osweiller, I think that a lot of folks here mistakenly believe that Sun Devil fans consider him some sort of "savior." It's not that, so much as a belief that having him in presents a far better alternative to the incompetent Sullivan. Osweiller's final stats didn't appear that great, but any objective viewer would recognize the promise that he showed. Among other things, it was amazing to watch a 6' 8" true freshman outrun speedy SC defenders for first downs on multiple occasions. Then the poise he showed in looking off his primary WR before tossing the TD, let alone the fact that he didn't throw two idiotic INTs like Sullivan did. The bottom line is that he isn't a savior, but he provides a LOT better option for winning games than Sullivan does. It's understandable that on a UA board posters will have fun at his expense, but there's simply no debate as to whether he's far preferable to Sullivan.
(3) A couple of other people have said that the Sun Devil DBs are weak, and I would have agreed with them going into the SC game. I thought that SC was going to absolutely torch the Devil secondary. But it was shocking -- the DBs actually played really well for the most part. The front seven is just scary good, so we'll hope that the DB play on Saturday wasn't a mirage.
(4) Overall, I still support Erickson at this point. His decision to stick with Sullivan, not to mention keeping Offensive Coordinator Olson and the flavorless playcalling are bewildering. On the other hand, he's assembled a speedy young defense that leads the Pac Ten, and there's young talent on the offensive side with such people as Marshall, etc. Obviously, he can't go through another season with an offense that performs this poorly, but I actually expect improvement and prefer the state of affairs right now to when Koetter was coach.
(5) As for USC, things are beginning to come apart at the seams a little bit, and it's up to Carroll to right the ship. I couldn't believe how poorly the OL played, because it's a strength of the team. I think a big difference that some have pointed out is that home field advantage seems to play an enormous role this year in the Pac Ten. Oregon/Stanford, Stanford/UA, A-State/UW, UW/UA, USC/UW, USC/Oregon, and some others seem to be games that went the way they did based upon the home field. Had the host team been reversed, I suspect the other team would have won.
